In June 2020 HSBC’s Asia-Pacific chief executive publicly signed a petition supporting the national security law. The bank said it “respects and supports all laws that stabilise Hong Kong’s social order”.

On record

On 3 June 2020 HSBC disclosed that Peter Wong, its Asia-Pacific chief executive, had signed a petition supporting the national security law that Beijing was preparing to impose on Hong Kong.

HSBC said on social media that it “respects and supports all laws that stabilise Hong Kong’s social order”. Reuters described it as the strongest show of support for Beijing yet by a major global bank. Standard Chartered issued a similar endorsement.

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong called it a “vivid example” of how China would use the law as leverage for political influence.
